Bowen Technique
What is The Bowen Technique & how does it work?
The Bowen Technique is a holistic treatment method in that it treats the body as a whole, rather than just addressing symptoms that have presented themselves. It focuses on enabling the body to reset and heal itself, through a series of non-invasive moves over connective tissue and muscle. Through the application of the Bowen technique, the body’s natural healing capabilities can be boosted.
What can it treat?
The Bowen Technique is suitable for everyone, and isn’t only applicable to individuals who are feeling the effects of illness, as it can be enjoyed by people in good health as a regular treatment method to ensure the maintenance of optimal body balance. Its provision of more energy and an improved overall sense of well-being can make a positive impact on an individual and their life. However, the Bowen technique is an effective treatment for:
- Emotional illness where the prime factors of pain and anxiety can be eased through relaxation
- Problems relating to body posture and alignment
- Injuries, particularly those gained through sports activity
- Musculoskeletal, back and neck problems
- Frozen shoulder, tennis elbow & R.S.I.
- Bronchial and related conditions; asthma & hay-fever, for example
- Migraine and recurring headaches, or other stress & tension based reactions
What can I expect from a treatment session?
It is an important belief held by Bowen Therapists that the body has the ability to adapt, adjust and heal itself; so it is generally best practice that the therapist will leave the room after each stage of the treatment for a few minutes in order to give the recipient time and space to absorb the work. This is an integral factor during treatment.
During a treatment session, the recipient will usually lie on a treatment couch whilst gentle rolling moves in series are applied to the surface of the skin, or through light clothing if the recipient prefers, enabling the practitioner to locate build ups within the muscle groups, and at junctions of bone, of tension and stress. Having located a build up, the practitioner will use moves from the Bowen technique to alleviate the build up, therefore granting the body the ability to reset and heal itself once again.
Recipients can often feel the beneficial effects of the treatment immediately after application; however it is not uncommon for the effects to only become apparent a few days after the treatment session. Overall, it is a relaxing experience with no known adverse side effects to date.
